how big a tire can i use without new rims or lift?

I have a '00 yamaha big bear 400 4x4 that I'd like to put bigger tires on but I'm a little confused at how big I can go on the stock rims. It looks like the 8 inch width limits me to 25s but I see where other have put 26 and even 27's on their big bears. Have they gotten different size rims too?
I'm not too worried about power loss because the big bear is geared sooo low i'd like a little more speed more than ground clearance. As far as tires go I've been looking at bearclaws for the all around performance, the mudlights and lightfoots for price. any thoughts anyone?

Just be careful with bigger tires...they tend to weigh more as well. It's not as big of an issue on big bore machines, but on something like my Wolverine, it's a big concern. I just don't buy it when someone says they went up 3 tires sizes, to a 6 ply tire and "noticed no difference at all".

definitely watch what u buy... you're gonig to lessen your power and stopping distance( more rotating mass and weight)
you will gain ground clearence and such but if i were you i would just determine your purpose( muddin, trails, agriculture) before you go off and buy a big tire... you can get good performance out of a smalelr tire if you put it with the right application
