I was testing my coil tonight with a Multimeter. Do you think my resistance checks indicate a bad ignition coil? My spark plug cap came up with 10.47 K ohms. From the terminal connection to the coil body (Primary Coil Check) I got .6 ohms. From the terminal connection to the end of the spark plug lead without the cap on (Secondary Coil Check) I got 6.43 K ohms. 1996 Warrior

These are the specs in my clymer manual: Hopefully they didn't make any typo's

Plug cap Res. = 10K
Secondary Resistance
1987-1989 = 5.06 - 6.84K
1990 - on = 5.44 - 7.36K
Primary Resistance
1987-1989 = .72 - .98
1990 - on =.36 - .48

 

If the clymer numbers are correct then it looks like I have a bad coil on my hands. The only reason I was wondering was because the "secondary Coil Check" from the terminal to the end of the spark plug wire lead was in correct spec.
Has anybody ever checked their spark plug caps resistance. Is it comparable to mine? The clymer manual doesn't tell you much about this. If it said it should measure in between 10K - 11K ohms then I would know something, but it just said 10K. Actually my manual is for the years 1987-1995 Warrior. Could somebody check the numbers in their manual that is for 1996 or newer warriors? That would be awesome.

 

Ok, 99 warrior here. I got 6.5 from terminal to end of plug wire without cap. I got 15.2 from terminal to plug wire cap. And terminal to coil body, I couldn't get a steady reading so I'm not sure.

What did you get for resistance if you hooked up to each side of the plug cap? Also I would really appreciate it if you tried to get a reading for the primary coil check. If you clean up the area that you are hooking up to it should give you a fairly steady measurement. It took me a few tries to get it to read steady.

My buddy is supposed to bring his warrior over so I can swap coils, but he is to slow. Probably wouldn't get aroun to it for months.

 

By the primary check, you mean one lead to the terminal and one lead to the outer body of the coil, right? If so, I will try to get a reading for you. I'll clean it up a little. I do have a seperate question for ya. Why is the ohms reading higher when testing the plug cap than it is when testing end of plug wire without the cap? I would have thought that would be the other way around. But like I said, I'm not too savvy with this electrical stuff.

 

Disregard that last question. I get it now. Daaaaaa.....thus the word resistance, huh? Hmm....if I'm getting a reading over 15 from the cap, I would imagine that is not good. Would I be correct in assuming this?

 

Is it 15K ohms. If yes I guess that wouldn't be good.
