another question from a new ds650 owner
#1
Ok,,, went out started quad to go for quick ride... Once it started, I heard a clattering... more like a tinkle tinkle. Sounded like something bounceing around.. This lasted about 30 seconds, it was from the front top of the motor. It almost sounded like something was in the exhaust or top end bouncing around. Once the noise stopped, I went for a short ride, and all is well. Ran perfect, no more noise.
I baought the quad of the original owner. Who rode it for a year before I baought it. He has never had the valves adjusted ....
Any thaoughts.....
Maybe something came lose,,,hmmmmm
thanks for the help

First off welcome to the forums. Was your idle low at the time, mine makes a rattle when it is at about 800rpm trying to die. So if it is idling low, turn up the screw under the carb. If that isin't the noise I would see about getting the valves set.

It was idleing low, struggled to stay running... But it has never done it since. I had it out 3 times since then , and no problems.
I'm going to get the valves adjusted.....
thanks

Dont worry about it. Its your cam chain tensioner. At low idle you will hear a tap and clank sound. With it cold its always worse because the idle level is different than when its warm. Basically its a spring loaded chain guide. Your timing chain will have slack and make the sound you hear. We all hear it and have all asked this question one time or another. They can also get stuck with the spring compressed. You can remove it and check it out...clean it with some carb cleaner. On the left side by your knee is a big flat nut you can remove ....it has some spring tension so it will pop out a little on ya. Just to be clear, make sure your engine is off when removing it.
Adjusting the valves on such a new engine doesnt make sence. On the DS you dont just "adjust" the valves, they have shims that you measure clearence and have to get just the right shims to get the gap right.

Excellent responses. Thanks guys...
I found a procedure on the internet for checking and shimming the valves if they need it...
My last quad was a 400ex. A little differant valve set up....
The dealer said the vavles should have been checked at 20 hours....
I didnt get a manual with it so I am going to have to order one...
Some really good info in here.
thansk again.

That inital valve adjustment is more like a checkup for warranty reasons they hold you to it and if you dont take it in and 4 months later if it blows up they will blame it on your negligence.
You can get a CD manual pretty easy.

It does depend on how many hours the original owner put on it in that year. We have well over 100 hours on ours in the first year, and valves had to be done. Never made a sound, I do agree that it is more then likely the cam chain tensioner though. If it went away, it was probobly just as Baja described. Worth checking though...
