How do you adjust front Shock absorber on 400EX. Do I need special tool? What is standard setting? Mine is set 1 click from the hardest position.

 

Well, since no 400ex riders have replied I'll try. I assumeyou're referring to the pre-load as I believe it to be the only adjustment On Honda's. I've heard that some plastic must be removed to get at the adjustment ring. It can then be rotated with a pair of 12" Channel Locks to the desired setting. From what you say, your current setting would seem to be excessive unless you are quite heavy as in my opinion the preload adjustment seems to simply do what the name implies ..apply an additional load to the shock to account for undue weight. I weigh 160 lbs & run my rear shock on my Warrior at minimum preload with rebound at about 50% for fast XC riding. Not sure what you aim is in adjusting the pre load. If is other than the above mentioned reason, I doubt you will realize much improvement in handling. The damping & compression is done internally in a shock, which is why most serious riders end up with aftermarket suspension. I run TCS fronts for that reason.
P.S. I just re-read your post. I had assumed you referred to the rear shock when I mentioned about removing plastic. In the case of the fronts just get a pair of Channel Locks. There are specialized tools available, but no good for anything else and don't do any better job.
