Sportsman Wet Belt Slippage???
#1
I have a Sportsman 800 and put it through alot of water. From what I can see the belt intake is in the same place as the air intake for the motor and there is no way of getting the belt wet without drowning the motor. My question. Has anyone had any problems with the belt getting wet?

I have owned a 2002 Sportsman 500, a 2002 Sportsman 700, a 2006 Sportsman 500 EFI, and my current 2006 Sportsman 800, and the only belt slippage (wet) I have ever encountered was on my very first 500, when I submarined it in a river. I was able to clear the hydro-locked cylinder and remove the belt cover in the field with the bare minimum of hand tools, and it was perfect thereafter.

polaris has made leaps and bounds in there belt drive trans water tight integrity. only time i have ever gotten water out of my case is when i hydro locked my eng with water. hmmmm yeah, so the tranny wasn't on the top of my list. i am deffently happy, my buddie has a older older polaris 4x4 2stroke and if i ride in the water and he looks on from the bank his belt will start slipping haha. even thow the intakes are high for the eng and trans, u still have the diff, and trans vent tubes. i'm not sure how they are ran on the 800's but u might wanna take a look at thows they can cause probs down the road if water gets into them. also beware of radiator fan runnin while submerged, it'll burn up the motor. well a lil more than ya asked for.

So far the only quad ive EVER seen have a wet belt, was a 2004 Wolverine that rides in our group sometimes. But im sure he has a bad seal or something because if you even mention water around his quad, it slips.

He's one for ya, When I was swapping clutches between the 800 and MV, I noticed the cooling air discharge tube was 1/2 off. Found the clutch and belt were muddy, but that thing never slipped. I was truely amazed. Who knows how long it was like that. I was nice and washed it out and fixed the vent before I took the 800 back. I know, I know, what can I say? I am a nice guy. I wouldn't want the next guy to have any problems with my old 800 lemon. LOL Turns out they removed the engine anyway to put new valve seals in it, that is why it was smoking. What ever, not my problem anymore

Only slippage problems I have had were on my 99' 500, was going through couple of mud holes with about seat- height holes in them for about an hr straight. Trying out new 589's, along with a buddy on an AC with same tires. Started slipping a little bit, just stayed out of the pit 15 min. and slippage went away.
