Need help with 1994 400 4x4
#1
Last week I bought a 1994 Polaris 400 2-stroke water cooled 4wd ATV cheap. I'm not an ATV guy so don't know much about these or fixing them. It does run and drive but, it won't idle. It just dies if you don't keep feathering the throttle. 2nd, the 4wd doesn't work. The speedometer is gone. The front shocks need bushings. I didn't get any manuals with this and haven't ever worked on one. All I know is it wouldn't be worth taking to a dealer cause it seems like the bill will end up being more than what it's worth. Any help would be greatly apreciated.

The 4x4 may not be working because of the way the shift linkage is hooked up.Example:
May go into gear but 4x4 wont work unless you slightly push forward or backward on shifter then it will engage. When I put a new transmission in my 400L 4x4 I didnt have the linkages hooked up right so it would go in gear but I had to push on the shifter for it to engage. There is a sensor in the shifter that is connected to the 4x4 engagement that needs to be right or it wont work. This may not be why its not working but it is something to keep in mind. You need to get all 4 wheels off the ground, put it in gear, then disconnect the linkage.Move the shifter around until the wheels start to pull then you need to reinstall the linkage. That will get you close to where the linkage needs to be but you will still need to adjust them till they are right.Dont forget that 1 linkage is for reverse and high and the other linkage is for low so you need to do that process on both linkages.
