01 SP 500 gets stuck in Reverse
#1
My grandpa brought his 01 SP 500 over because it is stuck in Reverse. THey had some trouble shifting it previously, before it got completely stuck.
I was trying to figure out exactly where the problem was. I disconnected the shifter linkages, and the shifter itself still seemed to be acting goofy. BUt then it free'd up and it worked fine. I hoooked the linkages back up adn it was shifting fine. Then i rolled it ahead a bit, and it shifted it and it got stuck in reverse again!
I just wanted to check if this is a common problem with a common fix. I think I have heard of it happening on several occasions with the Polaris's. Is it in the little box below the shifter itself, or in the transmission? I can't quite tell for sure.
Thanks!
Steve

I think it is in the linkage, I had an '01. Seems as if the 2 linkages would get stuck out of sync, sometimes shifting slowly would help. Make sure the "plungers" go all the way and the linkage is not keeping the "plungers" from going all the way in and out of the trans and "box"

my 500 does the same thing, only when i'm plowing snow or stuck in sticky mud, i have found out that if i the drive train isn't under a load, pushing against something and stoping, then trying to shift. for mine to get it poped out i have to pull off the linkage from the selecting lever and move the linkage by hand, with a lil TLC, or mabe a bit more. haha. my problem was in the trans i pulled apart the box below the drive selector levor and it worked just fine with out any linkages hooked up. i do not like the way the shifter is set up, but it is quite a bit better than my kow. i cant belive this is how its supose to be, but sence i have been more carefull with the timing and atv placement when shifting i havn't had the problem. if any one knows how to fix this i would appreciate it. as for gofast, sorry i dont have a fix for ya, but know what your going through.

I did forget about shifting when trans is on a bind, good point. That is when mine messed up alot too. I agree the "h" pattern is not very good. They changed it along the way. Now they are "l" pattern. Doesn't help you guys that still have the older ones. Look at the bright side, it is one more point you can use while trying to talk yourself into getting a newer quad!

Thans guys.
Instigator, I went with your theory and tinkered with one of the linkages a bit and now they must be working in sync a little better because I drove it aropund a while and shifted alot without any troubles.
Polaris's are great machines to ride, but definetly highter maintainance machines than anything else I have owned. Our Arctic Cat actually has been quite bulletproof.
