97 Scrambler 4x4 trouble

97 Scrambler
Looking at purchasing a 97 scrambler 500 but it has problem with front wheels locking into 4x4. Sometimes only one wheel engauges other times it will stay engauged. I was wandering what could be possible problem and or how to fix.
