OEM YUASA Battery Dead/Dieing?
#1
Hey all,
I have a 2004 Polaris Trail Boss 330, It doesn't get ridden much, Probably once a month for a few hours, sometimes it goes a little longer.
I also have a 2004 Suzuki Z400, that gets ridden only slightly more.
Both the batteries are YUASA's But my Suzuki battery Always has a charge.
The Polaris battery is always dead. I tried to charge it with a AGM/Gell Cell Charger (Thease batteries are AGM's right?)
But after a few minutes on the charger it errors out.
So I am assuming this battery is just dead? I did a search for batteries on this forum, and found alot of poeple having problems with YUASA batteries dieing. So I am guessing they are just junk?
Are all ATV batteries AGM?
Has anyone tried Die Hard ATV Batteries? I know they make a model that fits this Trail Boss 330. I have always trusted DieHard batteries for my cars, I am wondering if their ATV betteries are just as good?
How long do these atv batteries typically last?
** UPDATE ** I was origionally trying to charge the battery in the garage, which is about 30 degrees +/- 10 degrees.. The Charger would just error out after a few minutes, Last night I decided to take the battery out of the ATV and bring it inside. I set it on the charger in the basement, and just check on it, it says its fully charged 13.5v. I haven't had time to put it on the ATV yet to see if it's actually going to hold the charge. Can the battery freeze? or do they not charge when under certain temps?
Thanks for the help.

I'm not a specialist with batteries, but I've never had problems charging them in the winter over the past 18 years. I put a battery tender on my wife's ATV once a week (it's stored for the winter) and on mine every other day since I use it for plowing. According to the LEDs on the charger everything is working fine.
I've heard that batteries won't freeze as long as there's a good charge on them. Discharged batteries will freeze. I could be wrong, that's just what I've heard.

sheep isnt wrong. batteries will freeze if they dont have a good charge. if a battery is fully full of fluid and charged it wont freeze. i dont put acharger or tender on mine and next spring they start right up. they last about 4 to 5 yrs this way. if its a wet batt. make sure the cell dont go dry or it will kill the battery quick as anything. it shouldnt make a diff. at any temp tring to charge the batt as long as its not frozen.

My Suzuki Battery was a little weak, since its been a few months since I last started it, So I put the charger on it for a couple of hours and it charged right up.
The Polaris battery like I said would not charge in the garage. But looks like to charged fine in the basement.
The Polaris battery was completely dead, Where as the Suzuki battery still had some charge left on it.
So maybe the battery did freeze.

They are AGM Batteries.
They are sealed, non spilable/
I charged the battery in my basement, the charger said it was charged. I took it and hooked it back up to the ATV, now the ATV turns over, but just bairly.
And only a few times before not having enough power to turn it over anymore.
So I am assuming this battery is just toast.
Does anyone else with a Trail Boss have problems with it starting? This ATV Takes FOREVER to start. and The pull start is useless because it would take hours to get it to start cold with the pull start. and 1/2 the time the pull start locks up on the compression stoke and will rip your hand off.
Thanks,

Have the battery load tested. Any good auto parts store will do it for free. This will let you know if the battery is junk or not.

Can You load Test these AGM Batteries? I wasn't sure if you could since they are sensitive batteries.

I was told it was a good charger. Its MicroProcessor Controlled, and has a Setting for AGM/Gell Batteries.
