Kodiak Winch Solenoid placement
#1
After searching the forum for suggestions on mounting a winch solenoid on a 2001 Kodiak, it appears that mounting it in the storage box under the seat may be the best option. Did anyone who put it there need to carve out a notch in the plastic under the seat to accomodate the wires? Any other suggestions for a location?
Thanks in advance.

Top Secret, benstewart; you don't need a Warn A2000 solenoid AT ALL!
You can hook your winch control switch up directly to the battery.
The solenoid only disables the winch wiring when the ignition key is off; a safety feature, preventing activation of the winch when the quad is unattended, and damage/fire from short-circuit if noone's around.
Good wiring insulation, good cable routing (no pinch points), and the "advantage" of an in-line solenoid vanishes. Your call!

I plan on installing my solenoid in the storage box as well. I now have it direct to the battery, but I'am wary about shorting out in winter plowing usage vs trail riding thru muc and swampy water bogs. My dealer mechanic installed it direct. So far all I have had is a short in the switch where I believe is due to the way its mounted on the fender covering the metal under 16 warning label.

I ended up mounting it in the storage box under the seat. It worked out well. I mounted the remote switch plug for the Warn 2500 on the fender right near the 12v dc plug. It all looks good. It worked well when I used it with the plow to clear the 14" of snow we just got! Thanks everyone.

Ben,
I did the same thing as you with the remote switch. You must have the 2500 series like me. A friend and I found a flaw with this setup. Think for a moment. How are you going to get the fenders off now? You just wired the fender to the chasis. I bet most people with the 2500 didn't take this into consideration. I know my friend has a Rubican & I have the Kodiak, and we both did the same thing. So this is a problem with all quads, not just ours.
Here is the solution:
We got some trailer plugs, the ones that you hook the trailer to the truck with, and put them on. Now you can disconnect the wires with ease. Just pull the plug apart, and you can take your fender off.

Mine is in storage box also and works out well as it stays clean and dry. It's mounted w/ heavy duty fasteners from Radio Shack, so no drilling. I did have to notch out some plastic on the underside of seat to prevent smashing the wires.
