Question about belt light, tension, & shims
#1
I have a friends 05, 650 here and there were some issues with getting it to shift. I took the belt cover off and the belt looked pretty bad. I replaced the belt with a new one thinking that would help the tension (isn't secondary clutch supposed to spin a bit to allow it to shift) But is still appears to shift odd.
When I put the cover back on I noticed the belt light was on. Thats what brought me here. Now I seen some things about taking shims out, etc. I tried posting on ArctiChat, but for some reason as soon as I try posting, the window closes on me.
So, I know there is alot of info out there and available by searching, but since I have dialup, and searching can be a pain. I was wondering if someone could quick give me some direct links or explain to me how I turn the belt light off and what else I should check or do. (remove a shim??)
I would appreciate any help alot!
Thanks!

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "issues getting it to shift", but if your belt wasn't in good shape it had probably gotten too loose. With the new belt on, the first thing that I would do is verify the belt deflection. It should be between 22 and 27 mm. I think what I would do is go to a site called Kisssofdeath atv site. It has a section on the Kawi 650 transmission/belt, how to adjust deflection, with photos (same transmission that we have). Extremely helpful information. Your belt light could be on if you tripped that switch inside the belt cover when you had the cover off. If that's the case, and you'll have to check, there is a plug that came with your machine that is used in a specific sequence to get the light to turn off. I don't have the sequence memorized, but I have seen it posted on Arctic Chat before, and if you need it, I could get it for you.
On the 05's, the belt deflection is critical. I was aware of this before I bought my V2, and have kept the belt good and tight (have tightened it twice), and at almost 1500 miles now, the belt looks like new.
But as I said before, take a look at Kisssofdeath's site. It has all the info you'll need on maintaining/replacing your belt, otherwise, if I can help with anything else, let me know.
