Default New Quad

I have a few questions I know this is a honda forum. I ahve always had hoda quads. I am looking for a new quad for racing / dunes/ woods.

I am leaning towards the 450r however after reading the reviews it seems like the 450yzf is decent. suzuki isn't in the picture. I don't know if it is one of those or 660 raptor. Just want some honest answers even though this is a honda forum. I will also post this in the yamaha forum.

Thanks

The 450 is geared tall and the engine likes to be reved. It likes to run fast in open country, so I ride it only in the open desert and ride the 400EX on the tight trails. What do you mean by "dunes"???? If you mean Oregon Dunes, that is a whole different kind of dunes compared to say Glamis......

I see the YFZ as more of a track/play riding machine.

If you're going to be riding in open area's like dunes, and racing in the woods as well, I would look into the 450R, YFZ450, and Raptor 700R. And if you are actually going to be competing, I would stay with a 450 class machine since they are so well balanced.

Choosing between the YFZ450 and 450R is tough, IMO the YFZ450 suits smaller guys better and the 450R suits average to larger size guys better. And on a MX track I'd say the YFZ450 has a slight advantage, and on a woods type race or desert race, I'd give the advantage to the 450R.

For what I think you are doing I would look into the 450R, either way you won't have a bad machine.

You cant go wrong with either one. I own yamaha stuff but I like honda stuff as well. You can mod either one to do exactly what you want, its just a matter of money.

The yamaha will have that low end punch and is a little smaller and lighter

The honda will have that stretch of power and is a bit bigger and heavier

Thanks for everyones input. I was told that since occassionaly i will be riding with the wife trail riding in the woods looking at the scenery that i could possibly do some damage to the 450R motor do to lugging it.

Then later in the day I spoke with a dude who works on all these quads and is well know for how good he is through out glamis. He siad " that is bull crap he has taken his friens quads 450R included up to the sindars, river bottom, sand dunes and has never had a problem with them. He does suggest to break in the bike and after the 2nd tank of gas have him check the valves outl. after that check out valves once a year.

Over all the bike can handle what ever type of riding i choose to do i will get sic of changing gears while trail riding.

Doing damage by lugging anything is ridiculous. If you are going to be lugging it a bit, you might want to look into a gear change. Going down one tooth on the front sprocket has seemed to fit the need of a lot of 450R owners.

You don't lug the 450 in the tight/slow stuff, you just work the clutch a lot.......like if you were riding a 2-stroke. It's not a killer, it just gets annoying after a while.

Sounds like you need an all-around machine, and that would be the Suzuki Z400..........
