blowing across the lake this weekend and after shutting it down for a break, the electric start will not work. it pop starts and runs fine. the battery is fine. there is NO clicking at all when i push the start button, its like a dead machine. the elec start worked fine up until this happened. im going to check ground wires now but i dont think thats it. i dont know $h!t about elec all i can think of is either starter/solenoid/cdi? maybe the button itself? any ideas on what it could be are appreciated.

Most likely it's just the solenoid, start button, or the wiring connecting it all. I had a similar problem once. Something shorted out in the wiring harness, and it burned up the starter button and one of the wires within the harness at the same time.
To start troubleshooting this, get a short piece of some heavy gauge wire (at least 8 gauge) or use a pair of pliers to jump across the terminals on the solenoid. If the starter runs when you do this, then you can rule out the starter as the problem. Make sure you have it in neutral first though, because it'll try to walk away on you if it's in gear and the starter runs. Let me know what you find out, and I can help you more from there.

First check the battery cable connections are tight , check all wire's that connect to the battery post's ; i've had the small wire that hook's to the positive post break or corrode on the inside of the plastic rubber coating and cause this same condition ! The same has happened on quad's with positive groung , if this doesn't do it follow the thing's recon99 and what i'm sure others will jump in here and offer you with more options ; hope this help's and good luck to you ! ........................williebee

when i bypass the relay the starter turns...so its not the starter. i took the button apart but couldnt really see anything wrong in it...how do i tell if the button is bad? i dont want to buy a new solenoid and have the problem still be there.

You'll need a voltmeter or test light. Put the positive side of the tester on the small wire going into the solenoid, and the negative side of the tester to ground. Turn the key on, and press the starter button. You should get voltage to that small wire when the button is pressed, and then the power will stop when you release the button. You can also test the solenoid individually by connecting a small jumper wire between the + side of the battery and the small wire on the solenoid. That will bypass the starter button circuit.
