Default 2005 Rancher 400 AT mudding

A friend of mine has a 400 AT with 26" Swamplites on it. He says that it pull fine till he stops in the mud and tries to take off again. He says that it boggs bad, even in 1st gear. It also boggs if he varily holds the right hand brake. Any help would be appreicated.

Wrong tool for the job, I would say. My experience is that putting huge tires on little machines is a big mistake.

the only thing you can do with a 400at is trail ride. that is probly the weakest tranny honda has made. fine for trail riding just not much else. good luck!

He originally got it to trail ride and take hunting, but all of his running buds got into muddin and he did to. Problem is they have the big utes to do it and he doesn't. I tried to tell him that his trans wouldn't take it, but he is true red honda all the way. Oh well LOL. Also, is the carb on this thing a cv. If it is, has anyone open up the vacuum hole to help mid power?

Being "true red Honda" is not the problem. He just chose the wrong machine. The Rancher AT is not a work horse. It is not going to be a mudder no matter what he does. The best thing he can do is trade it for something that can be a mudder or take those tires back off. He should have gone with a Foreman or a Rubicon or even a regular Rancher.

It does have a CV type carb. I'm not sure what you mean by opening up the vacuum hole though. You can take the top off the carb and remove the spring, count off 10-11 coils and cut it. Put the long piece back in the carb and go have some fun. This just improves throttle response but it really makes a big difference and its free.

I know auto carbs, but I am new to these cv carbs. On the polaris site and on a Harley site, they say remove the slide that has the needle in it and enlarge the vacuum port hole. It makes the slide go up quicker. I guess ya'll are just lighten the spring pressure from the other end. Some might have a spring that doesn't lend itself to be cut so you increase the vacuum port size. Different ways to get the same thing, a faster moving slide.
