DS rear fender support?
#1
has anyone seen a rear fender support kit that allows the removal of the factory heel guards and allows you to keep an uncut rear fender? if the heel guards are removed the rear fender flops and hangs down and I dont want to cut mine. I read somewhere that someone is selling a rear fender support for the DS. anyone seen this or know what it is? or has anyone made their own decent looking fender supports and what do they look like? thanks again guys, Gregg

AC racing has some that come with there AC pro pegs. Before i got my AC pro pegs i was planning on just buying the fender supports...which are very nicely made. They were 65 bucks if i remember correct and they would sell them seperately.

Gregg, ditto what DuneRider said. I have two pairs that came with the AC Racing ProPegs and I run them with my IMS Roll Design pegs. I'm dropping a set off tomorrow with a friend who works in a machine shop. Going to see if he can fabricate something along the same design but sturdier. I have snapped off the tabs more times than I care to mention so we're trying to improve upon the design a little. Maybe go to steel from aluminum. If anyone has the time, skills, and materials I would be glad to send you a set once the duning season winds down so that you can tinker with your own ideas.
I get a prototype set in return. But only as long as they are an improvement...

Greg if you give me your email I will send you pic's of the ones I have on my Pred. They should be easy to make. But mine don't have tabs, which I think would make them even sturdier. just drill new wholes in the bottom of the fenders and cut the tabs off. If you are interested I can send you pics. You are a good enough fabricator you should be able to make some up.
Let me know.

The frame end. All of the fender weight is supported by a one and a half inch tab on the AC ones.

I took off my heel guards and used part of the stock steel hangers to make fender supports. Just a straight rod from the frame mount to both fender mounts and a ball bearing I welded on the end to keep it safe.... I think I saw this on Hightower's site. They work great, and the steel seems sturdy, not mild steel anyway. I have a couple of trips to the dunes on them. Let me know if you want a pic posted.

scott , yea lets see them. I think those heel guard frames are spring steel. even though they are small it takes a torch to bend them. thought about doing the same thing but wasn't sure how cool they would look just running strait across the open area between the fender and the frame. post em, thanks man, Gregg

I put a couple of pics up, my fenders are cut, but I'm not done with them yet. I'm going to round the bottom, cut off the tabs like cynik said, and flip the brackets. That will really clean them up.
To be honest the brackets tend to disappear. And since they are steel, they can flex and vibrate without weakening like aluminum.
