Chain too short...fill w/ extra master links???
#1
Hello again everyone. I have a problem. I just received a chain that I ordered from RockyMountain ATV. It is for a 2000 400ex. I called four diff. shops and even posted a question on here and got the same answer, 92 links. However, when I went to put it on today, it was about 2 links to short! I do not know if Rocky Mtn. will take it back b/c it is out of the original plastic. I was wondering if I could just order 2 more master links and solve the problem that way???? My only concern is that the tensile strength of the chain will not be as strong then. I really don't want to pay another $37 plus s/h for another chain if the master links will fix the problem w/ little or no side effects. It is a 520 O-ring chain (in case you were wondering.) Any ideas will be great. Thanks for the help yet again!

NO! NO! NO!
Never use more than one master link! You are asking for trouble.
My suggestion would be to contact Rocky Mountain and just talk to them. Let them know what happened. Above all, be honest, polite, and understanding of there position.
I have found that reputable companies are glad to take care of good customers. They want you to come back and recommend them to your friends.

Yes, I have stock everything on right now with axle all the way forward and it is still too short. I will give them a call tomorrow and see what they have to say. If they won't take it back, I guess I will just have to drop another $37 and change. I didn't think I wanted to use more than one master link but it was an idea. Thanks!

Master links will not even connect up. You would need an extra 1-1/2 links of chain plus another master link. Doing this is not the best idea as previously suggested. However, there are many much worse things you could do to your ride such as installing new chain on old sprockets, and regularly running dry, dirty, or muddy chain. I have run two master links before for short periods such as trail side repairs and when trying out a new longer swing arm and all with never a problem.
