Default 02' Sportsman 600 Top Speed 50 mph - Help/suggestions

Have a 02' Sportsman 600 that tops out at 50MPH. Changed the pluds and air cleaner. It does not pop, cough or stumble just holds at 50MPH...it use to go faster. Does anyone have an idea? Thanks

Check your belt , see if it meets specs. It may be getting thin , or you need to clean your clutches, do you do a lot of mudding ?

Polaris didn't make a sportsman 600 in 2002, 2003 was the first year. The production date might be 2002. As far as top speed. Check to see if the clutch is operating properly and if the belt is in good condition.

Check your belt and also check your limiter nut on the primary clutch. If the nut backs off a little you will lose topend. I've seen it happen more than a couple times.

Thanks for the the clarification on year...it was bought in 2002 and is a 2003 model. Should have included the belt has been replaced. Only has around 600 miles on the machine. Have not done much mudding, primarily in northern michigan on the sandy trials. Looks like most people are pointing me in the direction of the clutch. I guess I need to determine whether the clutch is operating properly under a load. Need to understand the limiter nut some more? Is it the nut that holds the clutch on, try to tighten if possible? Thanks

Look at #8 in the picture here http://www.partsland.com/index.cgi?N...0-DRIVE-CLUTCH
that is the limiter nut.

I have an 03 700 and it takes awhile to hit 55 mph. I never had a long enough straight shot to go over 60mph. Is that normal?

My '02 Magnum 500 doesn't take long for the needle to go past the 60mph mark, and it does keep going, I'm sure that I have hit 70 with it. It is stock except for some extra weight, like 2 up seating, a 2500lb warn winch, front rack extender.
