Default Child riding 4 wheeler w/o helmet

I just found out that my ex-husband is allowing our barely 13 year old daughter to ride a 4 wheeler without any safety gear at all.No helmet or anything.I'm of course furious.I know people who have been badly injured and killed on them without the proper gear.So I told her and my ex-husband that she can't ride until I can get her what she needs to be safe. The only problem is that I don't know what I should get her aside from a helmet. What else does she need and how expensive is this going to be?I'm on a very, very limited budget as the sole provider for a family of four. Thanks in advance for any help or advice that anyone might offer!

Welcome to the forums, jenni. At the very LEAST, she needs a helmet and goggles. However, and this is where it will get costly, I would also go for a chest protector as well. My 14 year old doesn't wear one, but they are a good idea. I will not, however, let him ride without a helmet and goggles. I was riding this past weekend and had a small branch smack me in the eye. Had I not been wearing the goggles, I think I would have lost an eye. Chest protectors generally are over 100$, but give John at Raceway a call, 1-888-RACE-ATV, he can probably get you a good deal on one and a helmet/goggles. He gives forum members in here a discount.

Thank you so much.I just can't believe my ex-husband has so little sense.Well yes I can I guess that's why he's an ex-husband.Ah the things we do when we're 18!Thank goodness my daughter innocently mentioned to me that she was riding one and told me the truth about not having a helmet. It makes me really uneasy to think of her riding without proper training also. She doesn't know the first thing about 4 wheelers. But hopefully the safety equipment will provide adequate protection should she need it.

NO HELMET!!! Thats just not cool at all. I even cringe when I see other people on the net in videos or pics that are not wearing a helmet. You can get helmets on ebay form about $50. Thats where I bought both my sons helmets and my nephew. If my kids sit ont eh quad they have a helmet period. Yes your ex is a ......Nevermind. I dont want to offend anyone.

Check out your local dealership. Helmets are not that expensive depending on the one you get. She can try it on to make sure of the fit since she hasn't a clue on the size.
I personally hate riding boots but I do wear 8" tall work boots.

Check Rockymountain ATV for helmets. Look in the clearance section and you may get lucky like I did and find one for 29 bucks.

It will tell you how to measure her head to get the right size.

And look at some cheap gloves. Boots of some kind, not neccessarily riding boots, but some type would also be good.

Good luck and maybe she can talk you into riding too.

I was riding this past weekend, taking it easy on the trails because of my upcoming knee surgery. My front tire hit a fallen log and spun it up and it nailed me right in the head.....good thing I was wearing a helmet.
That is actually what I said 'that is why you wear helmets' it hit me so hard I almost fell off the quad. Your daughter is lucky she was not hurt while wearing no gear.
Helmet, gloves and goggles are a minimum. I would also recommend anything other then sneakers, hiking boots or all terrain sneakers are better then nothing.

I love it when I hear people say that they weren't going fast, or not doing anything crazy. Like that makes it okay not to wear a helmet. Those are the idiots that get our land taken away and get us banned from places. No respect for human life. Pathetic. Sorry, once again this is something I feel strongly against.

You would be surprised how many people have extra helmets laying around in there closet or garage and most of them have hardly been worn or not worn at all. I just gave two helmets to some friends that were given to me so ask around you will probably get lucky. Also I bought my daughters chest protector on ebay for $14.00 shipping included. It looked like brand new when we received it. Just another thought.

Helmet, goggles, gloves, and decent hard soled boots are the minimum. The gloves and boots do not need to be atv/dirtbike models. You can get cheap($100.00) riding boots that offer better protection than workboots or what not. If you still have cash left, then chest protector and riding pants might be in order. At the minimum, she should be wearing jeans and long sleeved shirt. Seems like your ex should be springing for some of this stuff...
