An inexpensive ($15 at RockyMountain) but helpfull protective item:

This year I bought some NECK DONUTS for all of us that ride. Limits how far your head can bend when you crash, plus they keep your neck warm on cold days (if that really means anything to anyone). I have yet to ride with it on warm day. I got used to it after 1 ride on a dirtbike. I can see it being sweaty in the summer but I like my spine more than I dislike the sweat.
