1988 TRX 300 FW Electrical
#1
I bought a 1988 300 FW from a friend - it was not running and had sat in the Florida sun for years.
Someone may remember me asking where to start troubleshooting a no-spark condition. Got that fixed...It was the CDI.
I got a whole wiring harness of a 1992(afaik) model and used the cdi on this one.
Since then I've replaced the clicking CV's w/new whole CV shafts, New rear brakes - Rebuilt carboretor(properly) w/new float, diaphram etc...All new jets/needle in the OEM sizes....Swapped ALL the fluids at least once and generally went through the thing.
For the most part - it runs like new - perfectly. I've previously had a new one of these ATV's and this one runs as good as it did the day I bought it.
The ONLY problem is the thing hit's the rev limiter at like 35 mph in top gear.
My previous one (1994 same model) would run 55ish(mph) at WOT and never noticeably hit a rev limit.
I'm thinking this can't be a real OEM rev limit since it's so low....I'm wondering if there may be an incompatability with the new CDI causing this?
It runs fine in any gear till the majic RPM is reached - I don't have a tach or I would know the actual number - but basically it' starts missing at the same rpm no matter what gear.
I originally thought my main jet was too small - but I've tried fatter jetting and it has no effect on the problem.
Since I don't know the past of this ATV and have myself put electrical parts from other years on it - I'm really wondering how interchangeable this models years are(1988-2000)....
Thoughts anyone?
