just got me a sprtmn 700

just bought me a 05 700 sportsman, pure stock. will use for hunting and trail / mudding. already have a 00 400 explr 2 stroke. does anyone have any advice? mods to start with?clutch kits for more torque/low end power? How big of tires can I put on without lifting? whats the difference between the twin and the 700? the radiator is low so i know i will move to the top rack. has any body done this? results?

I ran mine for 2 summers with the radiator in the stock position, but got so darn tired of cleaning it constantly, and replacing the water pump seal and impeller. I moved it to the top of the rack, and havent had a problem since. I have about $20 in materials, mostly the hoses to extend up to the top. Check my website or my gallery for a picture. I covered it with a sheet of aluminum, and the fan motor extends down through the rack. I did have to do quite a bit of chopping up front to do this, but I wanted it as low as possible, so that I could still use the pod light if I wanted to.
The only other mod I have done, is to lift the front end to keep it from bottoming out in every dip I come to. Mine is 2 inches, as my springs were settled quite a bit, but I know other users have gotten good results with 1 to 1-1/2 inches. Input here, Sten? He has had several different lifts on his recently, so can give you some good feedback on the best setup for riding.

i had a 2 1/8" lift/spacers on m,ine and found it was extremly stiff and front end was to light for good corning. i ended up w/ 1 1/2" spacer and it handles alot better and still has a little bit of the soft feel toit but is alot better then stock when the springs sag. i have about 13 1/2" clearance as well. this is on my 800.

Thanks for the advice will keep in mind. Diesel them look like some cold monkeys. Noticed you still had stock tires. How do they handle the mud? We dont get to ride in the white stuff in mid ga. I am going to move the radiator first chance I get. Dont know what polaris was thinking when they pu the radiator so low. Like the power of the 700. Will keed an eye on the springs, dont want to loose the clearance.

27's will fit without rubbing anywhere. 28's will go, but may rub in the front, while in a turn, and hitting a dip at the same time! My rears rubbed badly with the 28's, just way too soft springs! 100 in/lbs is way too light for a 750 lb machine!

The stock rawhides were good for a while, but I would love to get some 26 or 27 inch XT-R's or equivalent on it. Maybe some Zilla's.
What part of mid Georgia do you ride? Anywhere near Culloden? I travel down to Thomaston once or twice a year, but have never been able to take the wheeler down with me.

We dont live to far from culloden and have rode there a bunch. will be going more now that my son has his own 4ler. They ride the fist Sat and Sun of every month and usually 3rd Sat of the month. That is my sons favorite ride. I like it as long as it has rained. no rain, its a dust bowel. can get crowded at times to but all in all a good ride. Google Rocky Creek Trail Ride and you can get thier dates. We went to Big Creek Trail ride in Hawkinsville, GA Sat. They have a short trail that goes down to a creek bottem and md hole after mud hole. If you like to mud or really want to see what your 4ler will do this is the place to go. let me know if you come down to ride. should have some pics later in the week.

Cool, It looks like it is a fun place to ride. My relatives live in the Thomaston area, so I am down there sometimes. I have never had a chance to bring the wheeler, though. My son has been after me to bring them the next time we are down.
Rain, snow, etc... here for the last couple of weeks, just when we thought we were done with winter. We are getting really anxious to get out on the trails. The countdown has begun!
