Default testing hot temp indicator light

Whats a good way to test the hot temp indicator light?

i just installed a new one and i just had my engine rebuilt and the mechanic tested the thermal sensor and it works, but i just want to make sure the whole system works.

is it ok to disconnect the fan and run it until the light comes on? shouldn't do any damage should it? take into consideration it is a newly rebuilt engine and less than one tank on it.

thanks guys!

you could but i wouldnt run it very long w/ out the fan or shuting it off. you take a chance of blowing head gaskets w/ overheating it and maybe warping the head.

I have no idea what you have, but on mine, if I disconnect the plug on the left side near the thermostat housing, my fan kicks on and it flashes hot. Apperantly that is a normally closed switch, when I open it, those things are turned on!

yea, the disconnect trick didnt work, so when i was replacing the coolant hoses i added a temp sensor and gauge and warmed it up and watched the temp carefully until it warmed up enough. at about 225 degrees the light finally went on, so i know it works now, but the temp gauge will be my best friend from now on.!
thanks guys!
