Sportsman 500 won't idle
#1
I have an '06 Sportsman 500 HO and it won't idle. I put in a new plug and set the idle screw on the carb but it still won't idle. As soon as you come to a stop and let go of the throttle, the machine dies. I also tried adjusting the throttle cable length and no go. Sometimes the machine will back fire when you try starting it again after it stalls. I figure there is something wrong with the carb possibly wrong fuel / air ratio but I can't see an air adjustment screw any where on the carb. The machine seems to run ok once you get it moving ... Any ideas before I take it back to the dealer? Thanks.

Hey fubar, did you take the cover off the throttle housing to make sure there is a gap between the contacts? I had troubles with my son's ATP and took it off. There were two contacts that were hitting each other. When I adjusted the throttle cable and left about a 1/16" gap it ran without stalling. Otherwise it sounds like a fuel delivery problem. Not up on the Polaris carbs yet.

when you changed the plug was it all black and wet? it might be getting too much gas and when it does fire it ignites the gas causing the back fire. there should be a gap on the throttle so the throttle override doesnt kit it off. just a thought.
