Default 2000 Expeditin 4x4 not working

I can't seem to get my 4x4 working on my quad. The front shafts are turning strong but the fron wheels will not turn at the same rate while the quad is jacked. I can actually turn the wheels backwards while the bike is in gear and running.. Any suggestions?

Is there power making it down to the front hubs? Mine was doing the same thing and it turned out to be a bad wire connection.

Default 2000 Expeditin 4x4 not working

I have voltage to the awd switch. Even with jumpering the contacts behind the switch, no 4x4. I looked at the wiring diagram and saw that the brown wires feed power and the grey return to the bulb and into the speedometer. Wouldn't ya know my speedo doesn't work either. I may be on to something here. Does anyone know what the speedo has to do with 4x4 operation. I'm on a tight budget so swapping parts must be kept to a minimum. Thanx for the help.. Pete

when you put the switch on does the light, light up? you said it has power. ive read where some of the older ones if the bulb is burnt out, the awd work work. also on the newer bikes the speedo doesnt work then the awd doesnt either. not sure about that yr though. i did read somewhere that there was a way to by pass the speedo but sorry i cant remeber where it was or if it was even on this forum.

Bulb is good, I checked it with a 12vdc source. The service rep at the dealership said the wire to the speedo is only for speedos that have 4x4 indicator. They want me to call them tomorrow and they'll work with me on specs since I'm doing the work myself. I told them I would buy parts from them out of good faith and gentlemanship.. Ever heard of a elec/mech hub shorting? I would think a coil would typically fail open....

Tankerfixer, read this post. http://forums.atvconnection.com/mess...ighlight_key=y

I have 2 2002 Sportsmans, neither has a 4x4 indicator on the speedo. The speedo grounds the 4X4 circuit. If the 4X4 light does not work the problem could be one of the transmission switches.

A Electric motor is really a coil winding.........They do fail open most of the time.....But they also can have a short to ground........Or the insulation on the winding breaks down and the resistance value can change ..Which effects the operation............Ohms reading in coil ..........Caper..........

Well before reading the post about the speedo, I chased the wires into the speedo and all the inputs were good. Speed didn't work so I jumpered grey/whit wir to the brown and I'm good to go.. I cut all the pins off the speedo so I could weather protect the plug with the jumper. Thanx for all the help..
