Why is there 10hrs on my new quad?
#1
I just picked them up this weekend. I fired them up last nite and noticed one has .5hrs and the other has 10.5 running hrs. Is this normal? Why was it running for 10.5hrs when it's s/b new? I had a lot of problems with this dealer and I don't trust them!
Any insight would be appreciated.

I don't know about the rest of the country, but here in Calif a quad sitting on the showroom floor usually doesn't have gas in it and the battery is filled only just before the new owner picks it up. If it was sitting on the showfloor, most likely it was that way. Is there any chance YOU left the key on after picking it up???
If it does have 10.5 real miles on it, that is a big deal! A new engine needs to be ridden hard at first to seat the rings properly. If somebody putted around for 10.5 miles in the parking lot at the dealership or something, the damage has already been done and your rings will never be right. http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

Here in arkansas the dealers tend to have ones in the showroom ready to go, But they have some(especially with smaller showrooms) that they pull from in the back out front every morning to be in the showcase.

I think I remember you saying these are your first quads, so here is some other good advice for a new machine: Change you engine oil and filter early on, like after 1 or 2 hrs. This will get any metal shavings left over from machining, out of the engine right away (my personal experience has been that Yamahas come VERY dirty from the factory!). During break-in, you should use a petroleum oil, but after break-in you can switch to a synthetic oil (highly recommended, especially here in So. Calif. where it is so hot).
Change out the oil in your front and rear differentials and transfer case (if it is seperate???) early on as well....again to get those shavings out.
Do a valve adjustment after break-in is complete. Like at ~20 hours.
Ignore the maintenance intervals that are in your owner's manual! Every manufacturer has a vested interest in presenting their products as being "low maintenance". Those intervals in the manual are based on ideal conditions (like no dust, etc.) that don't actually exist in the real world!

Some good general info on oils, and why you don't want to use "car" oils: http://www.thumperfaq.com/oil.htm
Some info on synthetic oils: http://www.maximausa.com/technical/l...beNews2002.pdf
If you pick a motorcycle oil that is API SG/JASO MA, you can't go wrong! Beyond that, the synthetics have advantages over plain old petroleum oil, and the ester synthetics have advantages over the other two types of synthetics. My personal choice is Maxima Extra, ester synthetic!

Thanks for all the advice. No I didn't leave the key in and this unit was not on the floor. It had to be ordered, it took a week. I am going to call them but my options are probably zero since I didn't notice it at the store.

I got a chance to look at them again. It is showing one mile on the ODO so someone must have left the key on. Feeling better about it. They sure smell good and new. I love the smell of Exhast/dirt in the morning.
