Default Scrambler 500 spark plug mod

I have attempted tonight to change the plug on my 04 scrammy and now that I am reading the forum my fears are right I have to take the plastic and tank off. Why include a spark plug wrench when it would be quite a job on a trail. Anyways I was thinking can a access whole be cut in the side of the plastic to give me easy access? What side should it be on? Just thinking that cutting a opening and then riveting a flat piece of rubber over the whole would keep it lokoking half way decent and give me access under the gas tank without major surgery!

Any thoughts?

You can get the plug out without taking off the plastic and the tank. If you need some help let me know.
