Clutch spring advise please
#1
I know this subject has been beat to death, so I'll keep it simple. I want to increase the performance of both my quads that are currently bone stock. They are a 1995 Magnum 425, and a 1996 Scrambler 400. Seems one of the easiest and least expensive mods would be to upgrade the primary clutch springs. I know very, very little about clutch springs and their relationship to rpm's and high/low end power. My riding mostly consists of trails, hill-climbing, and mud. I like a lot of take-off power but also enjoy a high top-end. What I'm looking for from those of you who do know the in's and out's of upgrading springs, is what do you think is the best spring for these otherwise stock machines?

Most spring changes will help on way of the other..........The stock ones is set-up to be the best of both worlds.
Others with more clutch tuning will jump in to help I'am sure.........All my clutch set-up was with snowmobiles.......So we had to pick.........Fast at the punch(throttle)..or higher RPM. for top speed...............most picked the hole shot......for racing there buddies off the line........This set-up was made by making the cluch engage at a lower RPM.....so the secondary was tight for quick belt hook-up.................Now on the top-end side.....Secondary spring was softer for higher top speed and the secondary would open up quicker and farther!!!!...Less resistance........Caper.........

Though I wish it was possible, I know I can't increase HP by changing the springs. I guess what I'm doing is trying to take advantage of the clutching "wizards" on this board because I neither have the time or capacity to learn it. If I have to choose, I would like to have more bottom end take off because most of my riding is on rough trails.

first of all by putting a higher engagement spring is not what you want for rough trails as you will be in and out of the clutch engagement all the time. most springs will increase/decrease rmp at engagement and at (wot) top rpm. if you want a faster shift out, you could change spring poistion in the secondary where it will shift out and rev quicker but loose top end. w/out changing the weights it hard to change the rmp band.

For the 425 Magnum go with a Polaris white spring(should be what is in the 400 Scrambler) and an Aaen blue secondary spring set at 2-2.The scrambler go with Aaen green primary Aaen blue secondary start with it at 1-1 and if you dont have enough backshift set it at 2-2.The stock weights will be ok .
