Default 1988 TRX 300 4x4 shifting

Hi everyone,
I have a low hours 1988 Honda TRX 300 4x4. This is my first ATV with clutch-less shifting, so I am not used to it. Well the issue is that when you shift between the gears while moving the shifting is VERY jerky and rough. Of course when I shift I am not giving it gas. The best way to describe it is like a person learning to drive stick, and they can't shift smoothly. Is that normal? If not, what might the problem be? Any ideas?

Thanks,
Zack

first, with a machine that old, do a clutch adjustment. If the clutch does not disengage all the way, it will jerk quite badly. there's a locknut with a slotted screw in the center somewhere on the engine, most likely on the right side engine case. loosen the locknut while holding the slotted screw part with a screwdriver. screw the center part in a few turns (should turn freely at this point.) then turn it out couterclockwise until you feel it start to tighten up (you're taking up the slack in the clutch mechanism) then turn it back clockwise 1/4 turn (puts just a little play in the mechanism to keep it from haning up with the expansion of the metal when it gets warm) then hold the screw here and tighten the locknut to hold it in place.
