Grizzly 660
#1
Hi Everyone,
My buddy has a 2002 Grizzly 660. It has been running fine for the last couple of months until last weekend. We had been quadding for over an hour and on a steep decend, it suddenly backfired and died (while he was off the throttle), but he was able to restart and carry on. Since then, it has been backfiring and dying more frequently. The subsequent times it backfired, it got harder and harder to restart.
We think it might have something to do with the fuel. Any ideas where to start. We thought maybe a bad fuel filter. Where exactly is the fuel filter located?
Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Its part of the petcock in the tank. Just take out the 2 screws that hold the petcock to the bottom of the tank and clean the screen off. Did he happen to be running low on fuel at the time? Sometimes you can have water in the bottom of your tank and it gets sucked when you switch to reserve. I would also drain the carb of fuel when cleaning the filter.

He had about 1/4 tank when the first backfire happened. He initially thought that he was low on fuel and after the first backfire he switch to reserve. We were able to travel back about 2 -3 miles without any incident. Later that same day, he had subsequent backfires and engine stallings, and it got harder and harder to re-start each time.
How difficult is it to remove the tank and the carb? We have never done that before and for those who have done it, is that anything tips or tricks?
Thanks.

I would try this first:
1) Unhook the fuel line and drain all the fuel from the tank into an empty fuel can. Make sure its good and empty.
2) On the very bottom of the carb bowl there is a drain screw. Open that up and let it drain.
3) Put in some fresh fuel and see if it starts running better.
If that doesn't fix it then there are other things you can try. Start out simple first though. Also make sure the air filter is doing alright.

HI Everyone,
I think we got the problem solved but we'll definetely be sure when we take it to the trails and let it run for a few hours this weekend. Here's what we found:
My buddy and a friend started taking out the gas tank. Before they even started, they found that the other end of the gas tank breather hose was sitting in a pile of mud and apparently it was blocking the hose! So we concluded that no air was getting into the tank and forming a vacuum. That explains why after the first time the quad died, my buddy opened up the gas cap to check the gas, and by doing so, he released the vacuum and was able to drive back 2 - 3 miles home. He never opened the gas cap after that and the problems started to worsen.
We cleaned out the breather hose, drained the tank and cleaned the fuel filter. We also attached an inline fuel filter for added protection. Hopefully that was all to the problems!
Thanks everyone for your help and input. We will find out this weekend how it runs. Hopefully the problem is solved now.
