Sound like the switch in the shifter is bad.Hold a little presure on the shifter and see if it makes the AWD light come on.The shifters on these wear where the switch rides and there is a couple fixes!.a complete new shifter(most expensive but best)2.find a used one and hope it isnt bad too.#.tie a bungie cord to the shifter and the rack(not the best idea but wil work until it totally ruins the shifter.

I have a shifter off a 95 xplorer, i was going to use it for an xplorer trans swap on my sport but since changed my mind .i think it has the wires and switchs everything complete
