Default 420 ES Shift malfunction

So Its happened twice now that my 420 ES decides it dosent want to down shift while brakes are being applied.

I took it to the dealer ,and they told me they couldnt duplicate the problem ,and they rode it half an hour, and I figuered this would happen cause it would eventually start funtioning fine for me before leaving the riding spot.

They said it had a temporary fail code in it ,and thats all he could tell me.
Temporary fail of what?!?!?!

Oh well hopfully it happenes again and stays that way so I can show them.

Question?

Did you get the manual shift tool with your Rancher?

I didn't with mine & my dealer tells me that they are on back order!!??

Stuff like this just annoys me to no end. Make more vehicles than tools that are supposed to go with it? Dumb...

Yeah mine had the shfit tool in the tool kit.

Havent had to use it yet as mines shifts pefect unless Im wanting to go into a lower gear while applying the brakes.

Not to fun on steep delines if I want to use engine braking as well.

Haven't encountered that symptom yet. Interesting. Does it happen with both front and/or rear brakes being applied?

Default 420 ES Shift malfunction

The code that was present termed as a temporary was a code 32 (PCM failsafe relay) or 42 (gearshift switch system) . It was tripped because of moisture in the left switch assembly wire harness connector, or a PCM (powertrain control module) connector.
The codes are stored mainly when applying the brake and shifting into reverse and also may occor while applying brakes while shifting down.
Moisture most likely caused it. I have not seen a lot of this problem as 2 units, out of hundreds sold from us, have had the problem.
Honda technitions were made aware of the moisture issue that may be present in some connectors and have instructed to make drainage cuts in the outer harness casing that may be trapping moisture from washing the unit, riding in wet conditions etc.... Also advised has been to disconnect the connector and dry of any moisture trapped inside. The connector is water resistant ( electrical grease is not advised inside the connectors for the effect it may have on the waterproof seals in time, making them soft or drying them out making the seals hard and unsealable) , since the connector is sealed moisture 'sweat' may become trapped inside. The only way in a nutshell I can explain this is when a glass mug is placed in a freezer, then removed and let stand outside of it. Moisture will develope. Moisture may build in this fassion, or seep slowly past a individual wire seal where the wires enter the connector. Hey even a ducks rear end isn't water tight !!

Try avoid pressure washing near or around electrical connectors.

I like spraying automotive ignition sealer around these connectors

Hope this helps
