Should I get 400EX or 450R
#1
I have the opportunity to get a 450R that is fitted with lots of extras but I don't know if I should get a 400EX instead even though I can get a good deal on the 450R. I currently have a 300ex and want something bigger. I ride mostly small tracks and trails and a little woods too. How much more maintenance is the 450R?

unless your raceing on the track get the 400ex it is built more for woods and trails
that 450r is built to run wide open. i have also heard about the maintenance on the
450 mainly the valves need adjusted very often

Yeah if your goin fast enough and are in the right gear you won't have to slip the clutch.. Stock 450's are good cruisers

I just don't know how fast first gear is...I hear they are geared real tall and don't want to have to slip clutch on trails ... plus is valve adjustment the only extra maintenace? I heard you have to change the oil very often too - like every couple weeks... I realy want this 450 but I don't want to regret it and sell it after a month

Only thing you'll regret is gettin a 400ex and then realising you want to go fast and have to sell that after a month.. Don't be a lil girl if you can afford it get a 450.. Is changing oil and adjusting valves really that difficult to you?

If my memory is correct . The valve adjustment is new age and you have to get a shim kit which is around $100 for all the sizes from Hot Cams.
I know this is the way it is done on the CRF250 and 450 . It isn't the old style locknut and screw type.
Which I do know the valve shimming is more of a pain and is does need to be kept up on. As , I have see the shims come out and wreck a cam before.
I personally would go with the 400ex .
BTW : WheelieKing , why are you so persistant on the poster to get the 450 when your signature says you have a 400ex ?
Thanks,
D.
