440ex vs 450r
#1
ok,i i have 400ex and dont wanna spend money on a 450 so i just bore it to a 440 right?as far as power and speed is there really a difference?and as far as the rest of the quad the suspension is the same, but the 450r is lighter
so really what im getting at is,is there really gonna be that big of a difference between a 440 and a 450 performance wise?
also what is the top speed on a 100% stock 440ex?
please respond i need to know! thank you

Been a while since I rode a 440, but it's going to depend on how you get the extra cc's. Your going to bore it??? Stroke it??? Both???? It can make a huge difference in what the end result is like.....
The suspension and frame (handling) on the R is superior to the EX, so you are giving up something there! The R is water cooled (and oil cooled as well in the 04/05's), so you are giving up something there as well.
The engines have different design philosophies. The R is a slipper piston screamer that likes to rev, and the EX is an old school skirted piston design that can be lugged down. You bump up the EX and you are going to want aftermarket suspension too.
I say if you are mostly a trail rider, just keep your EX and be happy with it....you already have the best machine for that venue....don't mess with perfection! If you need a quad that will scream on very fast open trails or wide open country, then just nut up and spend the money on an R....and you'll have the real deal. Don't go ruining a superb trail quad, by trying to turn it into something else.

first off what on earth is stroking?
second off, say i went to my local honda dealer with my 400ex how much would it cost to get the whole 440 package(bored and stroked and pistons and cams exc...)i just want to know what the whole package would cost about

You can change the displacement by making the cylinder wider (boring), or you can change it by making the cylinder travel further (stroking).
If you have a perfectly good 400EX that doens't need a rebuild...don't mess with perfection, and just leave it alone!
