TRX 300FW
#1
Hi, I recently purchased a 1993 Honda TRX 300 4x4 for $500, but there is something wrong with the motor. I was told that it was locked up and had been ran out of oil, when hitting the starter button, the solenoid clicks once, and the starter doesnt turn, the kickstarter will not move either. Sounds like it is locked up right, but I towed it behind the lawnmower the other day and put it in gear, and the motor turns over, through all of the gears, i may have just broken loose the bearing or whatever was locked up, but it does not make any abnormal noises when turning over. Also, while towing it with the ignition on, there is no spark. So I was wondering, before I take this all apart, is there anything that will cause the starter and kickstarter to lock up? I am going to take the starter out tonight and see if it functions properly. Can a 2wd motor work with the 4wd machine? Will the front drive mechanism bolt up the the motor? Thanks for the help

The starter shouldn't stop the kick start from working unless the one-way (starter clutch) was either seized or in backwards and because of the flange it can't go together backwards ...Maybe someone had it out and dropped it and put the little sprags in backwards ..

Well, I feel extremely dumb, turns out, I was attempting to kick the kick starter in the wrong direction. Once I figured that out I cleaned out the carb, put fresh gas in the tank, and tried to start it. It will start, but only maybe once in about 15 kicks, and once it is running, it smokes horribly and the longest i could keep it running for was about 30 seconds. So my guess is that A. burnt valve B. rings are shot C. scored the cylinder. I guess I won't know until i take the top end off, I can do that with the motor still in the frame right? What is everyones thoughts on overboring? Is it worth it on this motor? Also, I just read that the trx250 shares the same cylinder as the trx300, on ebay, a complete top end rebuild with pisont, cylinder and gaskets is $40 cheaper for the 250 than the 300, could i use the 250?
