Will an '05 400 EX run with a Z 400?

The ex is geared just a little better for the trails than the z. They will both hang together very well.
I wouldn't call the z faster, maybe quicker is a better description.

I've owned both and the Z400 is definately a little faster in a straight line, but as far as riding in the trails and what not with you're son, you couldn't get two ATV's that are closer in performance.

Have owned both. As far as top end, we once tested them side by side down a very long desert wash, where takeoff and rider ability were not factors.....just 5th gear pinned all the way. I was on a mildly moded EX, and the other rider of similar weight was on a bone stock Z. The Z slowly pulled away from me! It wasn't dramatically faster...but over the length of a mile it would have left me way behind....
As for low end grunt, the nod goes to the EX. The Z likes to rev and will spin its tires, where the EX is more torquey. On a tight trail, the EX has the advantage. You can put the EX in 1st gear and just idle through technical stuff. With the Z, you have to do some clutch work and keep it reved, which gets old pretty quick.
