What (oil) goes in that transfercase?
#1
I have a trail boss 330, and ready to change the transfer case lube/oil.
Has anybody figured out what lube/oil should be used in the transfer case?
The polaris brand is way overpriced, and the dealer will not tell what would be an alternative lubricant.
I have searched and read various post about this topic but there was no clear answer.
Some say use trans fluid, others say gear lube or motor oil.
It seems that the trailboss has a standard transfer case without clutch, similar to GM's Warn 241 (the older type 4x4 transfer case without clutch, chain driven, usually manually operated) which used standard trans fluid for lubrication. The oil in the case seems similar to ATF, it is very thin.
What do you guys put in the transfercase? beside polaris specific oil.

dealseaker,
do to the lack of response...it seems that most people don't know or don't want to know what oil it is that polaris re-labels. I think most people will just stick with the polaris stuff, which is cool, I do respect that. I repeat, I respect it, no need to start a flame war.
the transfer case in the trail boss or trail blazer holds very little amount so I guess its no big deal since it does not have to be change often.
The thing is that the nearest polaris dealer is an hour drive away.
I put mobil 1 synthetic motor oil in it. It took less than a quart.
Chain case lubricant is like nonexistent even at tractor supply store, they don't know what it is. Employees tried to sell me bar & chain lube.. ouch.
The final word here is:
the same or similar "chain case" where the gears inside are connected via a chain, just like most 4x4 or AWD truck transfer cases or front wheel drive vehicles use, have different oil in them. It varies by manufacturer, some has ATF some has 80-90 gear lube, some use motor oil. When I worked for a HOnda(car) dealer I recall manual transmission were filled with motor oil. The new Chevy trucks with auto 4x4 transfer case use a a lube with an additive because the transfer case has clutch disks.

I use Mobil ATF, working well for years. Have three Polaris quads with 0 trouble using this. But, my milage is not high on any of the three. I do use it in extremely cold weather up North for winter vacations without incident.
