question on rubicon transfercase, and oil filter
#1
when low gear ( L) is used on a rubicon ,
is there an actual transfercase with gears, which puts it in a lower gear ratio, just like on 4 x 4 trucks
or "lower gear" achived by keeping the hydraulic trans in low position longer and allowing higher revs?
also can any one confirm that the oilfilter used on the rubicon is the same paper filter used on XR400 dirtbikes?
PS: just purchased my rubicon ( 2001 - used),
and trying to learn a few things about it.

Yes it is an actual low gear, and yes it does take a different filter than a XR400.I also have a 2001 Rubi and its a great quad,Im sure you will be happy with it.How many miles and hours does it have on it?

zsebi, we have an 01 Rubicon and it has been a great ATV. It doesn't matter to us if we have the fastest ATV there is. We don't care if it goes through the deepest mud. We bought it because we wanted an ATV that would carry two of us and everything we carry; everywhere we wanted to go without hesitation or reluctance. It has done that for 3300 miles with one weld on the rear rack breaking and we cracked one floorboard. That is a total of $22, and we did upgrade the tires.
There might be somewhere else to buy oil filters but I get them from Honda, and everything else I own gets OEM filters also. We also change the oil, oil filter, 2 o-rings, and both drain plug gaskets every 500 miles.
The transmission is what makes the ATV, there is nothing like it in any other ATV.
Where did you find one with only 163 miles on it? Went in and rode the new Rancher AT yesterday and wanted to see a new 04 Rubicon with a GPS, but they said they wont have any for about 2 months.
If we bought a new ATV today, it would be a brand new Rubicon with the GPS, a Red one.
Enjoy your new ATV.

I got the ATV from a fellow "dirtbike club member", his wife was using the rubicon to ride around the pit when he was racing.
it is a very clean quad.
so far i love the rubicon and the power it puts out, and the ease of use (hondamatic trans),, it is just simply amazing, to have a fully automatic trans , with the ability to switch to manual trans by turning a switch....... wow !!!!
however I must be honest...... sometimes it just feels great to jump on my polaris 2 x 4 trailboss and go nuts on it, the polaris is just so nimble and feels much lighter. even thou it is not a racing quad. ( it is my wifes ride)
I am looking into purchasing a Warn 424 for my new rubicon - (I will request it as a birthday present)
other topic: oil------ (i don't want to start a long debate about oil , as it always happens when motor oil comes up )
I run synthetic in every bike I have, because I believe it is just much more supperior in any way.
has anybody experience any adverse effect because of synthetic oil in the rubicon????
thanks guys.

Farmking, I think every ATV manufactured shoud have the same trans as the Rubicon, including low range. The one thing I do like about the 350 4X4 ES Rancher is it's simplicity, two hands on the handle bars and you never have to let go for anything. With first gear being so low and having the reverse button right there, you can get it into every gear with your left hand, and I like that. I like that when you start up something bad and realize you should have been in low range on other ATV's, you just push one little button and you are in low and away you go. No stopping and shifting into low. We bought our 02 Rancher so our daughters could go with us (the wife and I) when they can. I have put probably 50 of the 925 miles that are on it and 44 of those were Saturday. I think my wife has rode it once or twice. Being for my daughters, I wanted it to be in 4-wd all the time, I liked the ESP and they do too. Very inexpensive to maintain and as dependable as any other ATV, two independent braking systems, being in 4-wd all the time, I feel it is a good choice for what we wanted it for. It is not the ATV for me.
The new 400 AT is just the same, it has that real low first gear and it is an automatic. I like the ESP "gears" on the new Rancher, in drive it is like the D1 mode on the Rubicon. More of the "sport" mode. I thought the trans and gearing is great. I liked the whole ATV. I liked the looks, its a little wider around the tank for the extra gas, the Trax-lok and ESP are easy to reach and you can shift in and out of 4-wd at any speed. I really liked the new Rancher AT.
The new Ranger doesn't need low range just like the 350 Ranchers. It would be nice if it did, just make it funner.
