Ok my turn with a possible '07 Hawkeye carb problem
#1
I appear to have a problem not exactly sure what.
I've ridden the bike since I did the Dynojet mod. It ran fine, no problems. It has sat for about 3 weeks now, and I got it out this afternoon.
First it started fine, ran great. I stopped once and shut it off for a few minutes, and then restarted it. It cranked longer than normal but started. I pushed the throttle and it began to move, then died. I smelled gas, and assumed it was flooded. I opened the throttle all the way and cranked until it started. After that it ran fine. I ran it back home, shut it down, and checked the plug. This is where I seem to have a problem. The center electrode is light, very light tan, almost white. That tells me it is lean. The rest of the plug that extends into the cylinder is sooty black, that tells me it is rich. I went out to the garage later, and it reeks of gas. Nothing on the engine, the floor, nothing in the airbox other than the strong gas odor. No sign of any gas leaking.
BTW, the exhaust sounds different, louder somehow can't really explain how. It did pop back through the exhaust once or twice today also. No big pop like a backfire, just a pop. As I said, it runs great, this was the first time I've really had it out since I removed 2 of the rollers from the clutch. It seems to be MUCH more willing to climb hills, and I'm at a loss to know what to do. I'm happy how it runs, but don't think the gas odor/sparkplug is right.

I have the same thing with my hawkeye, sometimes i smell fuel, It also pops after a hard or steady run because its on the lean side and i think the float bowl is overflowing just enuff to give off that fuel smell, since the motor is spinning faster with the clutch setup the fuel pump is pumping out more fuel than it can burn and after you kill it there is fresh fuel still overfloeing just enuff to be noticeble, i dont worry about it much.

Curious... if I let it idle for 30 seconds or so after riding it before I shut it down, might that get rid of any excess fuel? So I might not have the smell, and occasional hard start when it's hot?
If it's on the lean side, what about richening up the pilot jet a 1/4 turn or so? Or would that just make it worse? BTW, I have noticed it uses alot more fuel since I installed the Dynojet kit.

My guess is your fuel is boiling in the carb, hot weather and the carb being really closed in makes me think that. The higher rpm your running with the lighter clutch weights may add heat also. Run it without the side covers once to see if that helps any....

i have a close problem mine ran around the yard once then just shut off tryed to recrank it but it will only run with the chok on for 15 to 20 seconds then dies. wait ten seconds and will run on chok same amount of time

Good point, never thought about the gas boiling in the carb bowl. I know that gas with ethanol will loose octane rating because the alcohol will boil out of the gas, and most gas now has at least a 10% ethanol content.
I've considered running during the hotter months with the side panels removed. Just another reason to mount up a fan behind the oil cooler. A puller fan will also blow air past the engine.
I still can't figure out why the plug electrode appears good to maybe slightly lean, but the rest of the plug looks shooty indicating a rich mixture. I did have it back out today, and it started/ran with no problems.
