I recently purchaced a quad that the owner said he runs a 50/50mix, So is this a bad thing? I know the quad needs the racing gas due to engine mods. But he also said that high grade pump gas works but, the 50/50 is a better suited fuel.

Because the engine doesnt need the high octane of the race, but loww octane is too low, you mix it 50/50 because this will yeild an octane that is in the middle. Its a little cheaper than running pure race gas. He was trying to get away with as little octane as necessary, which is the right thing to do, even from a performance stand point.

Running 50/50 will increase your octane, but its also a good way to ignite the race fuel. Race fuel burns slower than gasoline, so by mixing, it helps ignite the race fuel. Race fuel also has lead in it making it better for lubricating your cylinders. It will also run a little cooler too. Me and all my friends run it that way and have noticed a difference. only down side is the cost of the race fuel. its spendy.

Another point of mixing the two fuels is to save money. The quad doesn't need all the octane of race fuel, so mixing it averages the two octane levels and gives you twice the fuel. You can buy 5 gallons of race fuel and mix it with the lesser priced pump gas and end up with 10 gallons of quality fuel for your quad. I've also found that race fuel doesn't degrade nearly as fast as pump gas. This may even help keep your fuel system a little cleaner. Just a thought....

Find out what the pressure is you are running and run the correct fuel to meet that to prevent detonation only. Anything else is a waste and does not help but actually hinders performance. Do no believe all the "stories" here about race fuel. It does not mix 50-50 linear with pump gas. You wind up with a mix that is much higher than 50-50 since the spg of the two fuels is different the octane gravitates to the octane of the race fuel. Also, be aware that there is "unleaded" race fuel. Not all race fuel has lead. The best fuel for anything runing 165 lb. pressure and under is 104 unleaded. It exists and is the most used fuel by two strokes in off-road racing.

I just bought Klotz race fuel for my 440EX and it was 114 octane! when I ran it I did notice decreased performance from it, I thought it was because of really wet sand making it harder to turn my paddles, but it probably had more to do with the fuel. I bought the Klotz because in my area in the winter they add 10% ethanol and add alcohol for emmissions I guess, is it really that bad to run pump gas like that? The Klotz was too much for my 10.5 to 1 compression.
