Default How much oil does 4-strokes burn

I was riding with a group of my buddies and our sons this weekend and we had a friends machine start acting up. Seemed like it was missing. After some air filter cleaning and other things, we checked the oil and it was real low. We put in over a quart of oil into a machine that holds 2 quarts. It was determined that the machine had an oil change at the beginning of the year and had been ridden give or take 500 miles. That evening, when we returned to the cabin we parked it over a dry spot on the pavement. We looked over where it had been on the trailer and their was no leak there. The next morning there was no further oil underneath and the oil level had remained constant. We checked the oil on some of the other bikes and they were down as well. The next day, the original bike did over 100 miles and the oil level remained constant.

I guess my question is, how often do you check the machines oil and how much should it burn? Any thoughts?

If the crankcase vent gets plugged it will pump oil out and even burn it.But none of my 4strokes have used excesive amounts of oil.

Hey ftwflh, would that be the hose that hangs down over the air box? We cleaned that out in the bike with the oil problem. Thanks for the input.

it would be smoking pretty good w/ that much use of oil.

Well I think the oil could have drained out into the air-box without the rider even knowing it happened!!!!................Did he get the quad on it's side or rolled over?.........If your not burning it,,,and not leaking it..........They my guess would be in the air-box!!..........Caper............

Take it from me when my wife went over with hers........It needed about 1 quart of oil also!!!!

As far as I know the bike has never been over on it's side. We opened the airbox and replaced the air filter with the K & N and a new prefilter and everything was clean and dry. Makes me wonder if the dealer really did the oil change or just blew it off and collected on the bill. Wouldn't be the first time.
