93' 300 4x4 wet clutch question
#1
Ok, for the past 6 years, the clutch has apparently not been working. Ever since I rode this four wheeler for duck season, I just thought it was normal for that year. I have since changed the nasty oil, and adjusted the clutch w/ the screw and lock nut...I may have messed up though. When I changed the oil, I added some Lucas oil additive, not too much, but enough that I thought would help...now after having to adjust the clutch after it was already set I realized maybe the additive was not a good idea for this wet clutch set up...What now? The thing kicked into gear on the up pull of the lever for the better part of it's life. I managed to break it free (against a tree) and will drain the oil again and re fill w/ just 10w40 MC oil. Please help w/ the clutch adjustment! It seems like it doesn't have all the power it should til rpms get up.

Not sure what is in the Lucas stuff, but it is a good bet that it contain friction modifiers that make the clutch slip. You want to run a motorcycle specific oil that is API SG/JASO MA, and that will insure that it is safe for your wet clutch. I recommend one of Maxima's oils...their Premium if you are working on the cheap. I would change out the oil several times in quick succession, to get the Lucas out of there quickly. But...this is an very old machine, and probably long long overdue for a new clutch anyway!
