Honda TRX300 only runs on choke
#1
Working on a 1994 TRX 300 2wd. This is the first ATV I have worked on so I need some help.
THe engine runs good on full choke. Take it off choke and immediately kills.
Has been sitting up for a while so we put new gas, oil, spark plug, air filter.
Could the gap on the plug be the problem?
I "cleaned" the carb as best I could. seems to be very very little varnish. I removed the jets and one of them looked clogged. I tried opening it with a metal rod and couldn't push it through. Has 4 spall holes running through the sides, but the inside tube is closed. Should this be open? It feels like metal inside, as if it is supposed to be closed.
Could it be the choke needle cutting off fuel flow?
I tried the idle at a few positions and had same result.
Thanks for the help.

Anytime an engine has been sitting up for a long time you can pretty much bet that the slow speed (idle) jet is cloged. It needs to be disassembled, soaked in carb cleaner, blown out and reassembled. hope you didn't damage the jet by pushing the rod thru it.

Classic clogged idle jet. I have two quads with the same problem right now, from sitting all summer (spring, fall, and winter are the riding seasons here...summer is way to hot to ride desert).
One other possibility is a leak in the air intake system (it is getting to much air, so cutting it down with the choke makes the difference).

Fuel stabilizers are moderately effective, at best! I speak from experience here!

go to your local auto parts store get a can of carb soke, it comes in a one gallon can. Disassemble your carb, and let it soke for 45 mins. wash off with carb cleaner and reassemble. just make sure you dont put rubber parts in the soke because it will eat them. Also use wire in various size to clean out the purge holes in the jets.
