2003 Honda Recon
#1
Fellas,
Has anyone had any issues with there battery box totally ripping off on there Honda Recon? Mine totally broke off the other day and left my battery dragging behind the ATV. Since then I have just taken the battery off and taped the wires to a bar to keep them from hanging. Now when I ride I have to pull start the engine. That is getting very very old... especially if you flood the engine has it takes forever. Its not bad when the ATV is cold because it will start right up on 1 pull. Has anyone had the battery fall out on them like that and what did you do? I cant fix it due to it being plastic...
I think I am going to take the plastic battery box to a welder and see if they can weld me a battery box together then weld the box to the bars somehow. Having it welded in like that, it shouldn't ever break again.
Also, when I ride a wheelie I start smelling gas. I checked the other day to see what was going on by popping a wheeling and putting the atv on its back so the front was in the air. I then rounded it and noticed gas was pouring from one of the lines. I guess its an overflow line? Is it normal for the ATV to do this?
Thanks in advance,
Neal.

Never had any requests for a Recon batterybox, so I would say it is not a common problem. Your solution to prevent it from happening again however would be a good solid choice. If you managed to break it once, in all likelyhood, you will do it again.
As for the gas leaking out the overflow, that is normal for that style carburetor. And a serious warning,...and it applies to ALL Recon and 250EX owners,....be careful with your wheelies regarding time in the air. Not distance, but time in the air. The oil pump pick up doesnt receive much if any at all of the oil when the front end is up for a long period of time because it runs the oil into the back of the engine case so far that thre pick up mainly only sucks air,..not oil....which is more time than not for nearly every engine failure we see on these machines. Something to keep in mind.
