Default Reverse not working in scrambler 500

Hey I just bought a 2002 polaris scrambler 500 on ebay. The guy told me up front that reverse does not work and that he had it fixed before for around 130 dollars. My boyfriend called a shop today and asked if they could look at it tonight at he told him that if it was in the transmission that it would be around 500 dollars to fix!!! What else could it be??

There are two chains in the trans, and the one is probably stretched or broken. Be sure to check the linkage first, but my Scrambler had the chain stretch and it would skip over the teeth in the trans. I replaced both chains for under $100 but I did all the work. The trans isn't too hard to get out but the left swingarm bolt goes into the case and it's a large head on the bolt.

Is this a 2x4 or a 4x4?The 2x4s have a habit of popping the snap ring that holds the reverse gear on the shaft. Not a hard job to fix but you have to pull the tranny and that is a 3 hr job for most (I have it down to less than 2hrs pull and replace)
