Took my new Hawkeye out riding with friends from work for the first time this week. They all thought it looked really good had a nice ride with the IRS. But, they all thought it felt a little sluggish and slow taking off. Which I tend to argee with. I love everything else about the little Hawkeye and the fact that it will go any where I dare to point it. (but not quickly)

What I really want to know is what mods do other owners feel to be the best? Uni filter or K and N? Dynojet kit? Clutch weight mod? I know that no one makes a exhaust, but are there any in the works? Also do the CDI? ignition moduals help any?

I appriciate any input and help.

My wife had a 2006 Hawkeye 4x4. We noticed a decent improvement with a K&N filter. As far as feeling sluggish on take-off, if you "launch" it with say, half throttle and then once it gets moving then increase throttle from there, it won't feel sluggish then. The reason for the sluggish feeling is the centrifugal clutch the Hawkeye has. The quicker you get it into the CVT, the quicker you'll tap into better acceleration.

There are some guys here who did a clutch weight mod, where they put in lighter weights, they'll have to chime in on the details of that mod.

 

I've had my Hawkeye since 06 and think its a great machine but remember its 299 CC. Its hard to marry Whoopie Goldberg and try to get her to perform like Paris Hilton. If you do to much, you might start to hate something you really like.

I will probably stay away from any type of clutch mod untill my warranty runs out.

I will probably go with a filter first, just don't know which one yet[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img]
Then a jet kit. Or I might do them at he same time.

The early Hawkeyes had a jetting concern but the mfg. should have that sorted out by now. They get really low on power at about 6,000 ft and run pretty rich there. At 1800 ft with the stock jet they tend to burn the plugs just a hair on the lean side so the carb dosen't seem to have much range in the jetting dept.

Remember, it is an entry level quad that is meant to have fun with rather than pound into the ground like its bigger brothers. A good rule of thumb. is "when you get something, you loose something else".

i'll be getting the new hawkeye known as the sportsman 400 on that hawkeye chasis......................

that should fix the power issue.
dealer will have it in red at the end of this month.
sold the 06 trailboss for the down payment.

 

Keep us posted on the performance. I'm thinking about upgrading also?

i believe all components to the new sportsman 400 is proven technology from previous models.

whats new is mounting that "450"cc motor on that better designed hawkeye chasis.

 

I have a feeling the hawkeye chasis will not hold up as the old 450 motor was on a larger machine and a much different frame design. But i am also waiting to hear about it. With the weights it will not void your warranty wether you use 10 12 14 gram because you can adjust those for altitude. I used the 12 grams weights in ours as well as the air box trimming mod and played with the jetting . Now the wife can wheelie it no problem the weights will help with quicker spooling on the primary
