Default 1997 Warrior making a noise hard to start.

I have a 1997 Warrior and its been making a noise for some time. It makes an engine noise while running and when you rev it up; it kind of sound like something is loose. I took the side covers off the engine but didn't see anything I thought would cause the problem.
Just recently it has not been starting with the battery. I bought a new battery but it still won't start, it seems to turn over slow. It will bump start and it runs fine except for the little engine noise. It does seem to shut off hard and make a noise.
I know you would probably need to hear it but any ideas?
Thanks

Thanks strike_fly I think your right. I was told that the stator may be going bad and the starter is not spinning the motor fast enough to start it. Thats why it will bump start and run fine. Im going to make time to look at it this week.
