I ride up to about 15 mph on my 500 with it in low. Since my quad is new I want the RPM's to be higher to help the belt break in properly. On the first trail ride I went on I ran in low about 60% of the time, stopping to put it in high when I knew I could get over 15 mph. Your quad has a rev limiter to prevent the engine from turning too fast in low.

I tried out low - couldn't tell much difference but I do see that you don't get as much speed but it wasn't what I was expecting because you can still do 20mph. I'm thinking I would just leave it in low all the time

hwks, i recommend you read your owners mannual bro, if you run around in low at speeds faster than 7mph you'll decrease the life of your belt, for most typical riding high is the way to go. just my opinion.

H should be the first gear of choice. If you find that the load is such that you're using lots of throttle to maintain a lower speed, that is when you should use L. Don't be afraid to use H.
I've had my 500 up to 15 mph in L for short periods. I do all my snowplowing in L. I also use L when I'm in mud or on steep uphill climbs, etc. I've had my 800 up to 20 mph in L for short periods. But normally I use H on both, I'd say 80% of the time on any given ride.

With sheep here, with the addition of pulling loads and technical terrain. Running in high under these conditions may cause your belt to burn. About 15 tops in low if you hold it open in low you should hear it start to miss when the rev limiter kicks in.
