Default ATC 185 Smokes when started up

Hi All. I have a 1980 Honda ATC 185 that I just finished restoring/rebuilding. Prior to doing all this work on it, I did get it running and rode it around just a short amount to make sure it was worth going through and fixing up. This bike had sat for quite a few years and had not been started at all. Not sure how long but it was quite a while at any rate. I noticed that when you first start it up, it smokes like all get out. After it runs about 15 minutes or so, the smoking pretty much goes away and smokes only about as much or a little less that a two stroke engine does. I figured based on past experience that it would quit smoking and clear up and go aways after it had been ran several time but it hasn't. I had thought about pulling the jug and honing the cylinder out and replacing the rings with standard size to see if it clears up and fixes the smoking problem. My next thought would be to just go ahead and get a piston and ring set and have the thing bored to match the oversize piston. I have no problem with boring it IF it needs it but I also do not want to over invent the wheel either. Just want to do what it takes to clear up the smoking issue. So a couple of questions here.

1. Has anyone had a similar issue and what did you do to fix it. Hone and standard size rings or bore oversize or ??

2. What are the different oversizes available and how much more CC does each give you? What does each take you to as far as displacement?

Incidently, when I pull the jug and head, I do plan on cleaning up the combustion chamber and intake/exhaust ports as well as lapping the valves for good measure. As long as it is apart, it just makes sense to do the whole thing.

Your thoughts, advice, suggestions are welcome and thanks for reading this!!

Unfortunatly it probably needs the topend rebuilt
Probably bad valve guides
Not a major thing
I would just go through the topend though if the rest of engine and trans are good
But I know the feeling my110 is starting to smoke looking at doing the same

Thanks Ray. I will just go ahead and make that a project for this winter. Other than the smoking, it runs awesome. Actually in my opinion, it almost has too much power for what it is. But then again as you get older, you find you are not as daring as you once were. Anyway, thanks much for the reply!!

Yea,
I know that problem
My Buddies and I have all decided we needed 110s after 25+ years going to the dunes
We now have more fun riding the 110s at night than riding quads all day
I also picked up a 185s with spare parts bike at yard sale about a year ago
Both are 1982 paid $50 for both In running bike about 350
Yes they are fast for no suspension but that is why we ride them
we have found 110 in hi range topped out is 2nd gear on 185s
I am getting ready to take the 110 appart and redo topend looking for Cam and higher compression piston
Have Header already
Ordered new 52 tooth sprocket replace 49 on rear as need power more than speed
No suspension that the rule
Thanks
Ray
