Default air box and exhaust mods

I have a buddy that has an 04 polaris 700 with efi on it. He has modified his stock airbox by drilling several holes in the lid of the box, close to the end to where if any moisture were to get in the filter is still safe. Then he unbolted the stock exhaust and drilled some 3/8 holes in the squirrel cage for more breathability. I dont know where he found this stuff out but he says it makes a huge difference in his machine, and he has some buddies with 800s who went and did the same thing and were blown away at the difference it made. Im skepticle about doing it, but if anyone has any clue to where I can find this please share. I put my hand over the holes in the airbox he drilled and when you hit throttle the holes suck your hand down to it hard, so it definatley helps it breathe. He also has switched air filters to an UNI filter. I have a 07 500 HO X2 deluxe and would love to grab some more available power if it is really available that cheap!!

no he didnt drill any holes in the snorkel, but he showed me how small that thing is and thats all the air the thing can pull through, so thats why he drilled the holes in the rear of the lid far enough back that water wont find the filter if it gets in!!

alot of guys w/ 700's were switching out there air snorkles, and their header pipes and putting 800 parts on to give some extra power because they were very restricked. personally i wouldnt be drilling holes into any air box that you go thru water/mud w/. their is a seal on the box for a reason and the air intake is high on these so you can go thru deep water. if theres holes in the air box, water will find its way in sometime. i find it hard to beleave theirs that much power to be gained there but maybe a little because of restriction, but remember that more power comes from free breathing and more fuel thru the engine. no more fuel then not too much power would be gained. just my opinion. good luck w/ it.

But by getting more air into the engine wouldnt the efi compensate by adding more fuel

i think it would need a remap when you add differnt exhaust and free breaking filters as it will compensate some but i think it wont be enoguh but im not sure.

The EFI will not compensate on it's own. It would need an 02 sensor to moniter the exhaust to see how much 02 is there or not there in the exhaust to see if it's lean or rich.

As far as drilling holes in my lid, no way in h3ll. The first ride I went on I'd put putting a engine in my bike. I don't care how much more power I would get, I wouldn't make it untill 11am and I'd be walkin LOL

thanx,

Well i agree about putting the holes in the airbox thats why I havent done it yet. I have burried mine in some deep crap holes, however I would have to completely dive under all the way over the damn seat for water to get in the top of the air box and I really dont see that happening much. I dont have any fording snorkels and dont plan to either. I know the dude plans to get the power commander soon for more fuel, I have a 3 year warranty to ride out before I get too crazy with mods so I guess Ill see if the dudes machine blows or not he he he. thanx everyone for the input

I think what would be ideal is if you know you
are riding hard pack all day w/o MUD and WATER
then maybe your could clamp on your spare air box
lid with the holes in it.

But for me I am still discovering all the power and speed
of my new 800. Man, do I really need more speed?
