Honda 250R 450 motor swap
#1
I own a Lonestar 250R with a CT racing 330 kit and a full suspension setup to complete the bike. The entire bike is aftermarket, Lonestar A-arms, swing arm, frame, hubs frt and back, PEP shocks, plus much more. I love the bike to death and almost get ill thinking of getting rid of it but it is getting tough always being the guy going "Hey I am out of fuel, again" riding with all the new fourstrokes, even with my desert tank. I love the two stroke power but can appreciate the newer fourstrokes as well.
Anyways, to the question, instead of selling the bike I have considered swapping the 330 motor out for a 450 fourstroke motor either the CR or TRX. I know they made hybrid race quads with a 250R frame and these motors. Has anyone seen this done upclose and have any idea how much fabrication work this would take or is it a somewhat painless swap. The hybrid bike pictures I have seen look like the motors bolt in with out too much fabrication. Any info someone has would be great.

I would hate to see an R bite the dust, but I do understand what you mean. My buddy has a nice almost bone stock R, and I have had to tow him home with an empty tank more than once.......

Hey reconranger- I appreciate your concern as it is mine as well. I love the R's, they are such great bikes. But I have to say I love riding the most and the huge cost difference in fuel and running short on fuel is cutting into that time. I am at a lost because the bike rides so nice and I do love that two stroke power!
How do you like you 450R? I have ridden a YFZ 450 and really liked it but it still wasn't the same as my 250R. Mostly in the handling and suspension but it is not fair to compare stock to a fully modified bike. I have only sat on a 450 and it felt odd and uncomfortable. But I do hear the motor is great, Honda of course, I like that you can get good power out of it with reliability.

Had not thought of a powervalve cylinder, thought of going back to a stock bore. Any clue what kind of power I could get out a stock or 265 powervalve cylinder? I would hate to lose the torque of the bigger bore but not sure how the powervalve would help.
In regards to a sixpack rack with a gas can. I have done that but two problems one the gas bill is starting to kill me. I go through 10 gallons of half race to half premium plus oil ($6.50 gallon) to the fourstrokes 2.5 gallons of premium ($3.10 gallon) and second I like to jump a lot and always end up knocking the extra gas can loose. Thus the switch to a desert tank.
What size carb do you think. I am running a 38 pwk air striker right now.
Thanks for the reply.

The powervalve will make the engine more efficient at lower rpms while still being able to have porting for high rpm power. 34mm carb on the stock bore will work fine and save you fuel vs the 38. Get in touch with Arlen at LRD and see what they could do for you. I had them build a 350PV for me a few years back and he will steer you straight. My experience on sled motors with mileage is a 9400rpm 600 non pv got 11mpg average, I then went to an 800pv sled and the mpg averaged 17 so there's gains to be had with the pv cylinders. Check your options before you give up on the 2 stroke otherwise I would save up and buy another quad if you have to, you can have more than one. Another thing is with the improved low end power you may be able to run taller gearing which could help mileage also......

Hey I will look into those options. Thanks for the info. I have heard good things about LRD. I have used CT racing in the past and have been happy. I will check with both of them.
Trust me I am not wanting to just dump the 2 stroke nor the 250R that is what has pained me so much. The powerband and snap of the 2 stroke and handling of the R just aren't in the newer bikes even though they are nice. Ideally would be to have another quad.
Thanks again.
